If you or someone you love has a low protein dietary restriction, this question is sure to come up quite a lot. Let’s end that confusion! PKU Kitchen strives to provide the means to find recipes that taste as great as the ‘real’ thing.
My name is Laila and I personally went some years off diet as a result of insurance companies and pharmacies unfamiliar with PKU. Due to these experiences, I, as tough as it is to say, gave up my diet and enjoyed really great foods, but I also dealt with the consequences. I was eventually able to get the insurance company I had wanted, and once I did, I made a commitment to get back on track! It wasn’t easy. I had to shift my thought process when it came to food, but I knew it was manageable. I mean, I did it when I was younger so I could definitely do it now!
As you may know, it’s a bit of a struggle to really know what you like, and nobody would like to eat something they did not enjoy! I experimented with a lot of different low protein foods provided by the insurance company and discovered the hits and misses, what I liked and did not like. I try to incorporate those hits into my daily diet, as well as finding store bought foods which I can make low protein.
I want this blog to be a resource where you can incorporate those insurance foods or even whatever you have locally, into your diet. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that we should have delicious foods just like everyone else, and I’m committed to finding them!
